Recently I have been giving a lot of thought to the question, ‘What is freedom?’ I guess it’s really a matter of what factors you use in deciding this question.

I’m sure everyone would have a different barometer to determine what freedom is, but to me there could be no greater gauge than looking at how many people a particular country puts into cages. How could a country that has the highest incarceration rate per capita claim to be the freest country? I find it obscene that anyone would consider the United States, the freest country in the world!

In the year 2003, over 6.9 million people were under some form of correctional supervision in the United States. In the year 2008 that figure had grown to more than 7.3 million; and this figure is still growing. To put this in perspective this is more people than most of the states in the United States have for population; more than Arizona, more then Massachusetts, and more than Washington. In fact that is more people than 38 of the 50 states of the United States in terms of population, making this in effect our 51st state…the State of Incarceration.

Said another way, the United States is the world leader in the number of people that are in cages. This ‘free’ country has more people that are either in jail, prison, probation or parole than any other country on Earth. Most of these people are incarcerated for non-violent offenses and most of them involve drugs.

A report released in 2008 indicates that in the United States more than 1 in 100 adults is now confined in an American jail or prison. The United States has 5% of the world’s population and 25% of the world’s incarcerated population, higher than in other country in the world!

Worldwide, there are about nine million people in prison. At year-end 2009 in the United States there were 743 adults incarcerated per 100,000 population. Most of the other countries have incarceration rates of 150 per 100,000. By comparison, the United Kingdom has a rate of 139 per 100,000. In the United States , one of every 75 men are in prison. If you go further and break this down by race, about eight of every 75 black men are in prison.

I am not saying that there are not people who should be in prison, but certainly not at the rate the United States has, and certainly not for a ‘free’ country. Most of these people are in cages for doing nothing more than smoking something that is as natural as tobacco. Most of them have never harmed another person, and are certainly not a threat to anyone. These victimless ‘crimes’ I like to call ‘fake crimes.’

It costs about $30,000 per year to incarcerate someone for a crime, fake or real. It costs over $3 billion a year to incarcerate drug offenders. When you consider that most of these are non-violent drug offenses, this alone is a good argument against the Drug War. From 1985 to 1995, there was an 80% increase in the federal prison population due to drug convictions. Prisoners sentenced for drug offenses make up the highest percentage of federal inmates (more than 55%). The United States non-violent prison population is larger than the combined populations of Wyoming and Alaska.

If recent incarceration rates remain unchanged, an estimated one of every 20 Americans can be expected to serve time in prison during their lifetime. For African-American men, the number is greater than one in four. From 1982 to 2001, the total justice expenditures more than quadrupled from nearly $36 billion to over $167 billion, a 366% increase. The average annual increase for all levels of government between 1982 and 2001 was 8%. Overall, local police spending represented 30% of the nation’s total justice expenditure, and state corrections accounted for the second largest amount, 23%.

Putting people in cages has become a big business. The increase in justice expenditures over nearly 20 years reflects the expansion of the nation’s justice system. For example, in 1982 the justice system employed approximately 1.27 million people; in 2001, it reached over 2.2 million. Overall, corrections employment more than doubled from nearly 300,000 to over 747,000 during this period. In 1999, the United States spent a record $147 billion for police protection, corrections, and judicial and legal activities. The nation’s expenditure for operations of the judicial system increased 309% from almost $36 billion in 1982.

Since the enactment of mandatory minimum sentencing for drug users, the Federal Bureau of Prisons budget has increased by 1,954%. Its budget has skyrocketed from $220 million in 1986 to $4.3 billion in 2001. Despite the investment of more than $5 billion dollars for prison construction over the past decade, the prison system is currently operating at 32 percent over rated capacity, up from 22 percent at the end of 1997. From 1984 to 1996, California built 21 new prisons, and only one new university. Another argument could be made that these conditions could jeopardize public safety.

Nineteen percent of state prisoners, and 16% of federal prisoners said they committed their offense to obtain money for drugs. This again is a good argument against the War on Drugs. If drugs were legal, crime would actually go down because people would not need to commit ‘real crimes’ to support their habit.

Department of Corrections data shows that about a fourth of those initially imprisoned for non-violent crimes are sentenced for a second time for committing a violent crime. An argument can be made that prison actually transmits violent habits and values, rather than reduce them.

Over the past 25 years, the United States has built the largest prison system in the world by far. But despite a recent downturn in the crime rate, we remain far and away the most violent advanced industrial society on earth. The average federal drug sentence is 75.6 months, while the average violent felony sentence is 63 months. The War on Drugs has let dangerous offenders off to make room for non-violent offenders.

Here are some more interesting statistics. Every year in this country, 8,000 to 14,000 people die from illegal drugs. Now compare that to over 500,000 that die from ‘legal’ drugs (tobacco, liquor and prescriptions). This is roughly a 50 to 1 ratio. Alcohol alone is involved in seven times more violent crimes than all illegal substances combined, yet our government continues to hugely subsidize alcohol and tobacco, while demonizing those who would exercise a different choice.

The government not only promotes legal drug use, but also would like to stiffen the penalties for illegal drug use. Former ‘Drug Czar’ William Bennett has advocated public beheadings of convicted drug offenders, and if former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich had his way, you could have been given the death penalty for ‘trafficking’ in two ounces of marijuana. Now, who are the real terrorists?

Every year more money is spent on the Drug War, and every year more people are put into cages because of this war. If we were going to win this war, it would have been won by now. Before drug prohibition, we did not have a drug problem in this country. Just like alcohol prohibition, the government in its infinite wisdom has created a problem where one did not exist.

The government’s War on Drugs is nothing more than a war on humanity; we need to stop government, before government kills humanity. I look forward to the day when the people declare a war on government.

Dr. Evil to the Rescue

http://www.squidoo.com/dr-evil-to-the-rescue

Whenever I hear the government throw around dollar amounts like they are playing a game of Monopoly, I can’t help but think of the movie ‘Austin Powers.’ The scene where he threatens to blow up the world unless he is paid $1 million and his assistant Number 2 leans over and tells him that a million dollars is not a lot of money anymore. He then changes his demand to $100 billion. Of course, what makes this scene is the camera coming in for the close-up and his finger at the corner of his mouth illustrating just how much money this really is.

I can’t help but laugh when I see the government using the same reckless method to ‘save’ the financial markets. Every time there is a crisis, the government can be counted on to come up with some exorbitant amount of money to ‘fix’ the problem. As I watch the President or some other government shill, I keep waiting to see one of them raise a finger towards their mouth as the camera pans in for a close-up. The only problem is unlike Austin Powers, this is not a movie and it’s not funny.

I remember watching news reports a few years ago during the Bush administration. With a price tag that would make even Dr. Evil envious, the Bush administration announced it had a plan to bail out the financial firms. The plan was to buy the bad debt that these firms were holding. What was the price? Over $500 billion (finger to mouth as camera zooms in). Of course, this money doesn’t really exist, but then again neither does any of the money they so frivolously throw around. This is also on top of the billions and billions (finger to mouth camera zooms in) of fake Federal Reserve Notes they have already put into the markets lately to falsely prop them up.

I keep wondering when the rest of the world is going to wise up to the Ponzi scheme the Federal Reserve is operating. Maybe it’s because these other countries are too busy trying to keep their own Ponzi scheme into play that they are missing the shell game being played by our own shysters. Oh yes, this house of cards will finally come crashing down and very soon. I don’t think there will be any amount of fake currency that will save us, either … no matter how many fingers they raise to their lying lips.

I have a two part plan to pay off the National Debt which is now at well over 15 trillion dollars. If it’s so easy to just create this kind of ‘money’ out of thin air, why not just print enough money to just pay off the debt? Hell, let’s fire up those printing presses! let’s print enough fake Federal Reserve notes to pay off the debt and balance the budget at the same time. Let’s just print up trillions (my finger raised to the corner of my mouth) and take care of our fiscal problems in one swift move!

Before I get bombarded with emails explaining why this would not work because all that will happen is the problem would get much worse, because we would be inflating our already devalued dollar, let me explain part two of the plan. Immediately after we pay off our foreign debt, we change our currency to another form other than the dollar…maybe we will go back to shillings or better yet the return to the gold system and coin real money. Problem solved, debt is paid off and we are now trading with a real currency once again.

I know what you are thinking, what about the rest of the world being pissed off at us for pulling this scam on them? Oh well, if you do business with a thief, that’s to be expected. They were stupid enough to buy into this ponzi scheme to begin with, so they get what they deserve.

You cannot make something out of nothing; it doesn’t work that way. The Federal Reserve is nothing more than a scheme, one that would land the average broker on Wall Street in prison, but the government gets away with it every day! The United States government is the number one counterfeiter in the world, the number one Ponzi scheme operator and the number one enemy of the free market system.

Don’t expect to see any of these criminals on the evening news; it isn’t going to happen. The only thing you can expect to see on the news is the next crony announcing the next answer to a problem created by the very system that is going to ‘fix’ it. How will they ‘fix’ it? Well of course they will offer $_____________________ (fill in the blank and be sure to place your small finger at the corner of your mouth).

Well all is not lost; I played the lottery Saturday night … maybe I will get lucky and win $100 million dollars (my finger raised to the corner of my mouth).

Funny Money

http://www.squidoo.com/funny-money

One thing that I always get a kick out of is when I buy something with my fake Federal Reserve Notes, and the cashier whips out her magic pen. You know the one I am talking about, the one that is able to distinguish between the counterfeit notes that the Federal Reserve prints, and the ones the average novice counterfeiter prints. With a swipe of the pen, they have assured themselves that the notes I have given them are legal tender. I always wonder if they have ever given any thought to the fact that all U.S. currency is counterfeit.

Of course being the smart ass that I am, I can’t help but screw with them. I usually start by making a sly comment like, ‘Those are good, I just printed them this morning.’ Which always gets a chuckle out of them; they are not going to fall for that one. Then I ask them how they know the bills that I gave them are real? If they are aware of how the magic pen works, they will tell me it knows how to tell the difference between ‘real’ money and ‘fake’ money by the color of the mark on the bill. Apparently only the bills counterfeited by the FEDS will leave a yellow mark when the magic pen is swiped across them. This always begins what will be a series of very strange looks by them.

I will start by asking them what makes our money ‘real’ in the first place. Of course the reply is usually something about ‘real’ money is printed by our government. My next question is what makes the money they print real? By now the strange looks have become more prevalent, and they are starting to look a little frightened. Usually they have no answer to this other than something like, ‘Duh, I don’t know.’ I then go on to explain how all of our money is counterfeit and not backed up by anything other than the government’s word (and we all know how good that is).

By now they are just trying to get me through the line as quickly as possible, convinced that I am obviously crazy for having such thoughts. They are worried that I may freak out and start taking hostages, or worse, bust a cap in someone’s ass. Of course I look them in the eye, smile and laugh on my way out the door. I have been told that I have a strange sense of humor, and maybe I do. I must admit, I do get great enjoyment from tormenting sheep. Childish, you say? Maybe, but it beats tipping cows.

I am still amazed at how many people believe they are carrying around real money in their wallets. Most people do not realize that the Federal Reserve Notes that they spend have no value at all. If someone disputes this, all they have to do is go to the FEDS’ own website and read it with their own eyes under ‘legal tender status’, question #2. When you get to the bottom it will explain that the notes are not backed by anything, and have no value. There was a time in this country when a person could take the currency that they had to a bank, and trade in their promissory notes for real commodities such as silver and gold. After all, that is what a promissory note is, an IOU, a guarantee that real money is securing the mere paper that it is printed on. Without this, it really is not worth more than the paper it’s printed on.

The Federal Reserve is neither Federal, nor is it a reserve; it is actually a corporation. In 1913, one of the biggest scams in the history of our country was pulled on the American people. According to our own words scribbled on parchment, only Congress shall have the power to coin money, and regulate the value thereof. Then how is it that foreign banks now control our money in the way of Federal Reserve Notes? How is it that a corporation that claims to have only $63 million in securities and a total net worth of $303 million, claims to be able to guarantee over $630 billion of fake Federal Reserve Notes in circulation today?

Other corporations like Enron and World Com were brought up on numerous charges, and people went to prison. Don’t expect to see any breaking news about this scandal on the evening news, because it won’t happen. The only reason other corporations can’t get away with this type of fraud is because the government hates competition.

The only way to stop this scam is to stop investing in Federal Reserve Notes. There are plenty of places to get real money; we don’t have to continue to finance this Ponzi scheme. Invest in real money, hide as much as you can, and cut these bastards off. The only way we can win is to stop feeding the monster; it’s time to kill Leviathan.

An Enemy of the State

http://www.squidoo.com/an-enemy-of-the-state

Why would a middle class white boy grow up to be an enemy of the State? That’s a question I have asked myself for years. It was not always the case. I grew up like most people, waving the flag and brainlessly regurgitating mantra that is the Pledge of Allegiance. There was a time when I believed the United States had the world’s envy and presented the standard other countries desperately tried to emulate. As far as I was concerned, anyone who disagreed with me was simply uninformed or crazy. I usually dismissed those people as un-American liberals, femi-Nazi’s or just utopian peace-loving hippies. I naïvely thought I had the world figured out.

My hero of the Eighties was Ronald Reagan. I’m embarrassed to admit Rush Limbaugh served as my Zen master of the Nineties. It was unimaginable to me that anyone could disagree with such reasoned philosophy. Rush carefully guided me through the “big government” days of the Clinton administration and solidified my dedication to the small government Republicans. (I can hear you laughing at me.) Incidentally, I currently yearn for the relatively small Clintonesque government we had then, as compared to the drunken Bush leviathan that followed or the “change” we had with Obama. I actually believed if we could only get a Republican in the White House, then all would be well again.

I remember how fortunate I believed I was by virtue of being born in the world’s freest country. I never challenged the traditional patriotic brainwashing I had been fed all my life. I felt bad for others who lived in such un-free places such as Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and other “backwards thinking” countries. I was a hard core, patriotic and brain dead American. I was also damn proud of it!

I was as philosophically happy as a contented sheep. I was neither looking for another philosophy nor was I inclined to accept anything that differed from my thoughtless patriotic mantras. A loud mouth friend of mine insisted on constantly babbling about freedom to me. Initially, I thought there was nothing to discuss. After all, who is against freedom? Over time, I came to realize I didn’t have the slightest understanding about what it meant to be free. The constant discussion began to shatter my little sheepish world. At first I tried to fight it. I didn’t understand how anyone could believe people could be trusted to make decisions concerning their own life. I did not comprehend how humans could survive without government.

Who would build the highways; deliver the mail or pickup the trash? Surely people were not smart enough to figure these things out on their own. What a strange concept this thing called libertarianism was, people actually taking responsibility for their own lives and deciding for themselves what they should be able to read, write, watch, drink, smoke or ingest. How would people be able to handle so much freedom?

How would we educate our kids without The Department of Education? How would we know what medicines are safe without The Food and Drug Administration? Without The Drug Enforcement Agency would everyone be a drug addict? Any reasonable and logical person would be able to see the tribal need for government. Government is a necessary evil right? No matter how clever I thought my argument to be, it was quickly shot down by one of my libertarian friends, who had been freed from The Government Matrix some time ago.

I was now beginning to understand the scam of government. The Democratic guise of nine wolves and a sheep voting on what’s for dinner was now clear. Freedom good, government bad, bad, bad, bad, bad! I was now re-born. I felt like I had seen the truth for the first time in my life and I was angry that it had taken so long. How could the Maharushi of the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies have been wrong? Even Ronald Reagan did once say that he felt the heart and soul of the Republican Party was Libertarian. Did he secretly know the truth?

I then started to wonder why others did not embrace freedom as well? Surely if I presented this thing called libertarianism to everyone else they too would freely accept it. How could anyone be against freedom? To this day it still puzzles me that I have to try and sell freedom to people. Truth is, with freedom comes responsibility and people are afraid to take on more responsibility than they have to. If the government will make decisions about their own life, well that’s one less thing they have to be concerned about. I had come to understand that most people were nothing more than Sheep. Sheep go where they are herded, eat and drink what they are given and never question why.

I would never be able to drink their Kool-Aid again, not now. I owned myself and I must be the one who decides what happens with my property. I now understood the meaning of “self-ownership.” Even though I now knew that others were not interested in freedom, I never thought that they would encumber my freedom. Surely just because they did not want to live free they would not try to coerce me to accept their chains of slavery. Miserably it would seem that slaves desire company. It is not enough that they are sheep, but you must join their herd as well. The premise seems to be safety in numbers.

A peculiar thing happened to me on my road to freedom: I hit a blockade. I realized that we had become an Orwellian society where the sheep are more than happy to give up their rights if Big Brother can guarantee their safety. I could not believe the pathetic declarations that the sheep had now begun to recite:”If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.” “I am willing to give up some freedom for security.” What a pathetic people we have become! We have sacrificed essential freedom for security and we now had neither.

What was wrong with me? Why couldn’t I just learn to conform? What is it that separated me from the herd of sheep on the street? Maybe the libertarianism that I love so much was really a double edge sword. Life would be easier if I just learned to “bah” like the rest of the sheep… no way screw that, I am right! I don’t just think I am; I know I am! It’s the George Bush’s and Bill Clinton’s of the world that are wrong. Freedom good, Government bad, bad, bad, bad, bad!

I can now comprehend the fact that there is no possibility of freedom in this Country. It’s too late. Call me a bad American if you wish to, but I am ashamed and hang my head low when I think of what America has become. Why would we try to enforce our will on others and disregard their sovereignty? Who appointed the United States nanny for the rest of the world? What an arrogance we must Depict. The experiment is over, freedom lost, tyranny won.

I now desire to learn to speak with an accent and claim to be from somewhere else, anywhere but here. I am in the process of Country shopping since this one is obviously going to be bombed into oblivion soon. I can’t say that I will even feel remorseful. I look at it as doing the rest of the world a favor. Maybe the rest of the world will learn from our mistakes and grasp the true meaning of Peace, Liberty and Freedom? I am aware that talk like this will label me a terrorist; so be it. I guess in reality I am a terrorist. I support Freedom, Peace and Property, these days those are fighting words. I was once proud to be an American, now I am proud to be an Enemy of the State!

Are we really the Land of the Free?

Don’t kid yourself, we are not the land of the free and have not been for a very long time. We are becoming more of a police state by the day. If you think otherwise you are just uninformed or you are one of the ones that benefits from this by making your living off the police state.

We are not the “land of the free” but we are quickly becoming the “land of the incarcerated”. Under the guise of freedom the government has created a war on everything from drugs to it’s latest enemy, the Internet.

The United States claims 4.6% of the world’s population but 22.5% of the world’s prison population. The DEA has grown from 2,775 employees in 1972 to almost 11,000 employees with 86 foreign offices in 62 countries in 2005. We have well over two million people in prison. Since 1980, America’s general population has increased 20%, while America’s prison population has increased at twenty times that rate or an astonishing 400%. America imprisons more people as a percentage of our population than any other country in the world. This is a sad state of affairs for any country; especially one which refers to itself as the land of the free.

This effort has resulted in effectively creating our 51st state; the state of incarceration. The state’s population is growing out of control and it is choking the life out of the other 50 states. Thousands of peaceful Americans are currently living in cages because of the drug war. The drug war is lunacy and it must end immediately. As it did for the revolutionaries who founded our country, the time has come for us to be bold and courageous. We must speak out against this horrendous mistake.

I have always found it laughable that when the government wants to do something to screw over humanity (which is their reason for existence), they always find a way to give it a jingoistic or benevolent name. This is nothing new, but they have gotten better at it over the years. It used to be subtle, but now it’s right in our face.

One of my favorites has always been the Internal Revenue Service. The mere use of the word service is a farce, as if they are doing us the service. They steal our money, and then refer to it as a service; only government would have the audacity to conceive of such a scam.

Webster defines service as: ‘a. The work performed by one that serves (good service) b. Help, Use, Benefit (glad to be of service) c. A contribution to the welfare of others d. Disposal for use (I’m entirely at your service)’

Anytime the government does something to benefit their own useless existence, it is always sold to the sheep as a service, or something that is in their best interest. The wars on drugs, prostitution, terrorism, and the countless other wars that are nothing more than a war on humanity, are all sold as something to protect us from ourselves.

When the government steals from us under the guise of words like taxation, wealth re-disbursement, funds appropriation, or revenue collection, it’s still the same thing, theft! If I were to steal your wallet, and later tell you that I donated the money to charity, would I be less of a thief? Theft is theft, even if it’s for a good cause, even if it’s for a really good cause.

Yet even I was astounded when the USA Patriot Act was passed. This was their most clever guise yet. After all, who could be against something called the ‘Patriot Act’? How anyone could believe that this Nazi piece of legislation had anything to do with patriotism or freedom is still baffling to me. What exactly is patriotic about trashing our freedoms?

I recently became aware of a new law that was added a few years ago. As you can probably imagine, it is to protect everyone, and advance freedom for everybody. As you can also probably imagine, it too has a name that espouses freedom. It is known as the Justice For All Act of 2004 (HR 5107). Doesn’t that just make you feel warm and fuzzy all over?

Now with the addition of SOPA they are targeting their next enemy…the Internet.

In the future, I am sure we can look forward to all kinds of legislation that is in our best interest, and all with very patriotic names. I am sure it will be no time at all before we will see, the ‘Property Fairness Act,’ which will allow the government to seize your property more easily, and the ‘Parents Rights Act,’ which will allow them to kidnap your children and place them in foster homes.

We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force. ~Ayn Rand

Video

Atlas Still Shrugs

http://www.squidoo.com/atlas-still-shrugs

No other book has influenced my life philosophically, politically or emotionally the way that Atlas Shrugged has. It would be fair to say that I am who I am because of this book. This book defined the meaning of life for me and gave me a better understanding of society as a whole. I can still remember how I felt the first time I read John Galt’s speech…it was then that I began to “get it.”

The Destruction of America

The destruction of America can be defined in one word “altruism.” Altruism is the belief that we owe a duty or loyalty to others just as we do to ourselves…what rubbish! Rand destroyed this myth in her book Atlas Shrugged when her character known as John Galt took over the airways and let everyone know that we are not our brothers keeper, nor is he ours. We do not owe a higher duty to anyone other than ourselves and that everything we do is for our own personal gain, just as it should be.

From the time of our conception everything we do is for our own selfish reasons, as it should be. The chance that you were even conceived is because of a selfish act of one of the millions of sperm beating the others to the egg first. Altruism played no part in our conception, so why should it play a part in out lives?

Everything we do is and should be for our own self interest. Why would we do anything for any other reason? Indeed there are no truly selfless acts. Any act that someone may think of is done out of a self interest. Things like donating to charity although it helps others gives the person doing the donating a sense of gratitude knowing that they helped someone. This sense of gratitude gives that person a good feeling, which in turn is a self pleasure. Because of this, the act of charity cannot be considered a true selfless act because the person received something from it themselves…a good feeling.

Many will take what I am saying as selfish and think I am implying that we should not help others. This is not what I am saying at all, of course we should help others, but not through force or coercion, but of our own free will and choice. Of course we feel a sense of pleasure when helping others and there is nothing wrong with self pleasure. Everything we do should be for our own interest first, but if we can help others in the process great!

Altruism is not a virtue, it’s a cancer. America was built on free market Capitalism and people doing things for their own self interest, just as it should be. There is nothing evil about Capitalism and making money. It is not wrong to look out for your own self interest, to do otherwise is to deny your reason for living.

I swear by my Life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for the sake of mine. I am John Galt!

Altruism Defined

Altruism is defined as:

The principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others ( opposed to egoism).

To many this may sound very noble and they would probably question why I would have any issue with this. Altruism is not a natural behavior nor is it consistent with survival. From the moment of our birth and even the time before our very conception we were programed for survival. As I pointed out earlier, even before we were conceived there was a battle going on for survival. Of the millions of sperm that could have been responsible for your life, only one was ultimately victorious in fertilizing the egg that made you what you are today.

During this battle for survival altruism did not play a part. At no time did any of the sperm sacrifice themselves for the good of the others. Quite the opposite in fact, it was a battle until the end. In the end only one went on to fertilize the egg that eventually become the person that is here today. Since that time we have fought for our own survival.

As Machiavelli pointed out, no one does anything that is not in their best interest. Many people have tried to come up with a completely selfless act to counter this statement but have failed. One might say a mother who takes care of her child is a selfless act, but not so entirely. One reason she does so is because she does not want to be looked down on by society as a bad mother. This feeling of praise as being a “good mother” gives her a sense of pride. From this she receives satisfaction making the act no longer a selfless one. This is not to say that a mother does not love her children and has only selfish reasons for taking care of them, but they are also not completely selfless either.

John Galt Speech (condensed)

For twelve years you’ve been asking “Who is John Galt?” This is John Galt speaking. I’m the man who’s taken away your victims and thus destroyed your world. You’ve heard it said that this is an age of moral crisis and that Man’s sins are destroying the world. But your chief virtue has been sacrifice, and you’ve demanded more sacrifices at every disaster. You’ve sacrificed justice to mercy and happiness to duty. So why should you be afraid of the world around you?

Your world is only the product of your sacrifices. While you were dragging the men who made your happiness possible to your sacrificial altars, I beat you to it. I reached them first and told them about the game you were playing and where it would take them. I explained the consequences of your ‘brother-love’ morality, which they had been too innocently generous to understand. You won’t find them now, when you need them more than ever.

We’re on strike against your creed of unearned rewards and unrewarded duties. If you want to know how I made them quit, I told them exactly what I’m telling you tonight. I taught them the morality of Reason — that it was right to pursue one’s own happiness as one’s principal goal in life. I don’t consider the pleasure of others my goal in life, nor do I consider my pleasure the goal of anyone else’s life.

I am a trader. I earn what I get in trade for what I produce. I ask for nothing more or nothing less than what I earn. That is justice. I don’t force anyone to trade with me; I only trade for mutual benefit. Force is the great evil that has no place in a rational world. One may never force another human to act against his/her judgment. If you deny a man’s right to Reason, you must also deny your right to your own judgment. Yet you have allowed your world to be run by means of force, by men who claim that fear and joy are equal incentives, but that fear and force are more practical.

You’ve allowed such men to occupy positions of power in your world by preaching that all men are evil from the moment they’re born. When men believe this, they see nothing wrong in acting in any way they please. The name of this absurdity is ‘original sin’. That’s impossible. That which is outside the possibility of choice is also outside the province of morality. To call sin that which is outside man’s choice is a mockery of justice. To say that men are born with a free will but with a tendency toward evil is ridiculous. If the tendency is one of choice, it doesn’t come at birth. If it is not a tendency of choice, then man’s will is not free.

And then there’s your ‘brother-love’ morality. Why is it moral to serve others, but not yourself? If enjoyment is a value, why is it moral when experienced by others, but not by you? Why is it immoral to produce something of value and keep it for yourself, when it is moral for others who haven’t earned it to accept it? If it’s virtuous to give, isn’t it then selfish to take?

Your acceptance of the code of selflessness has made you fear the man who has a dollar less than you because it makes you feel that that dollar is rightfully his. You hate the man with a dollar more than you because the dollar he’s keeping is rightfully yours. Your code has made it impossible to know when to give and when to grab.

You know that you can’t give away everything and starve yourself. You’ve forced yourselves to live with undeserved, irrational guilt. Is it ever proper to help another man? No, if he demands it as his right or as a duty that you owe him. Yes, if it’s your own free choice based on your judgment of the value of that person and his struggle. This country wasn’t built by men who sought handouts. In its brilliant youth, this country showed the rest of the world what greatness was possible to Man and what happiness is possible on Earth.

Then it began apologizing for its greatness and began giving away its wealth, feeling guilty for having produced more than its neighbors. Twelve years ago, I saw what was wrong with the world and where the battle for Life had to be fought. I saw that the enemy was an inverted morality and that my acceptance of that morality was its only power. I was the first of the men who refused to give up the pursuit of his own happiness in order to serve others.

To those of you who retain some remnant of dignity and the will to live your lives for yourselves, you have the chance to make the same choice. Examine your values and understand that you must choose one side or the other. Any compromise between good and evil only hurts the good and helps the evil.

If you’ve understood what I’ve said, stop supporting your destroyers. Don’t accept their philosophy. Your destroyers hold you by means of your endurance, your generosity, your innocence, and your love. Don’t exhaust yourself to help build the kind of world that you see around you now. In the name of the best within you, don’t sacrifice the world to those who will take away your happiness for it.

The world will change when you are ready to pronounce this oath: I swear by my Life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for the sake of mine.

What Does All This Mean?

The point Ayn Rand was trying to make in Atlas Shrugged was not that we should all be selfish people and not care for others, but that we should not put others before ourselves and our own needs. Of course it is okay and noble to want to help others, but not by means of coercion and force. All charity should be voluntary or it is not charity.

Today we are taught that we are our brothers keeper and his needs should be placed above our own. This of course is nonsense and goes against our very nature. I do not have an obligation to anyone, nor does anyone have an obligation to me, unless they or I choose to.

As John Galt so eloquently stated:

“Then there’s your ‘brother-love’ morality. Your code has made it impossible to know when to give and when to grab.”
